Chefchaouen, also known as the Blue Pearl of Morocco, is one of Morocco’s most picturesque towns, nestled in the Rif Mountains. Though our visit was short—just one night—the charm of its blue-washed streets and relaxed atmosphere made a lasting impression.

Getting to Chefchaouen
We traveled from Tarifa, Spain, taking the ferry to Tangier, then a 2.5-hour bus ride to reach Chefchaouen. We were amazed that we could just take the ferry from Spain and end up in Morocco. The bus ride was a scenic journey through the mountains – quite a lot of curves though.
What to Do in Chefchaouen
1. Explore the Blue Medina
Wandering through Chefchaouen’s narrow alleys feels surreal. Every corner is painted in different shades of blue, making it a paradise for photographers and travelers alike.
2. Plaza Uta el-Hammam & the Kasbah
This lively square is the heart of the town, surrounded by cafes and the historic Kasbah Museum. Climbing the watchtower offers a great panoramic view of the city.
3. Sunset at the Spanish Mosque
A 30-minute hike leads to the Spanish Mosque, a perfect spot to watch the sunset over Chefchaouen and the surrounding mountains.
4. Try Traditional Moroccan Food
- Tagine – a slow-cooked stew
- Fresh Moroccan bread & olives
- Sweet mint tea – a must-try
